Sometime between the Greeley Stampede and Colorado State Fair we hit peak rodeo season, with a handful of horse shows, barrel races, roping competitions and more happening at any given time. Here’s what’s coming up this week.

Rodeo season.The officially sanctioned Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association portion of Gunnison’s Cattlemen’s Days kicks off tonight with the Golden Circle of Champions rodeo. The self-proclaimed “granddaddy of Colorado rodeos” offers competition and entertainment during the day, and a free drone show and arena after-party Friday night.
In Estes Park, the Rooftop Rodeo carries on through Saturday. Military personnel and families get discounted admission Thursday for military appreciation night. Attendees are encouraged to wear pink Friday for breast cancer awareness night, and Saturday an America 250/Colorado 150 celebration takes over the stands. Elsewhere on the Front Range, The Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo runs July 10-12 at the Jefferson County fairgrounds, presented by the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association (“Colorado rides with pride!”).
As for ongoing rodeos, the Snowmass Rodeo opens the arena every Wednesday night, and the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo happens every Friday and Saturday through Aug. 29.

- Colorado Black Arts Festival.The 40th annual celebration of Black music, art and food in Denver’s City Park. Live performances take place across four stages, and a children’s pavilion will offer family-friendly activities. Free; July 10-12; City Park, 2001 Steele St., Denver
- Erie Balloon Festival. Watch as dozens of hot air balloons take flight over Erie every morning this weekend. Stop by the field for family-friendly tethered balloon rides and walk among the baskets during the Saturday evening glow. - Summit Screenings.A free, family-friendly evening of climbing and games, along with a screening of “The Queen Swing” about Laura Pineau and Kate Kelleghan, two climbers pushing to complete the Yosemite triple crown.
