A climber died Sunday after falling on the north face of Castle Peak south of Aspen, officials said Sunday night.

Officials in Gunnison County received a call just after noon Sunday of the fallen climber on the 14,265-foot mountain located on the border of Gunnison and Pitkin counties. A Mountain Rescue Aspen search team was called in and a Flight for Life helicopter flew over the area and located the climber. The helicopter transported the team to the site at 4 p.m. and reported “the individual had sustained injuries that were not survivable,” according to a news release Sunday night.
The body was pulled from the mountain using what officials called a technical lowering system. The name of the climber has not been released.

Castle Peak is the tallest mountain in the Elk Mountains and just east of the popular Conundrum hot springs. A total of 21 people were involved in the recovery. The work was complete by 8:14 p.m., according to Mountain Rescue Aspen.
Last week a climber died after falling on the nearby Maroon Bells, which are northwest of Castle Peak. Because of the technical area, that person’s body is expected to be recovered Tuesday. The Maroon Peak area will be closed Tuesday during the recovery mission, the U.S. Forest Service said.
