{"id":596,"date":"2026-06-18T23:32:46","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T23:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coloradorelocationreport.com\/?p=596"},"modified":"2026-06-18T23:32:46","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T23:32:46","slug":"da-drops-arson-charge-for-man-accused-of-starting-destructive-wildfire-west-of-loveland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coloradorelocationreport.com\/?p=596","title":{"rendered":"DA drops arson charge for man accused of starting destructive wildfire west of Loveland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A man accused of starting the Alexander Mountain fire in Larimer County is no longer facing arson charges after prosecutors uncovered new evidence showing he could not have caused it.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradorelocationreport.com\/?p=594\">Colorado state budget picture improves \u2014 but not enough to reverse cuts to public services<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 8th Judicial District Attorney\u2019s Office moved Thursday to dismiss the charge against 51-year-old Jason Alexander Hobby, saying new evidence \u201cdirectly contradicted original theories\u201d that he started or maintained the fire.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation into the 2024 Alexander Mountain fire included interviews with hundreds of witnesses, hundreds of police reports, more than a terabyte of digital evidence, multiple forensic evidence reports and hundreds of hours of body-worn camera videos, the district attorney\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence related to Hobby\u2019s potential alibi, access to the fire origin location and digital evidence from his cellphone provided direct evidence that he is unlikely to have ignited the fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be unethical for a District Attorney\u2019s Office to pursue a prosecution in which they did not believe the correct person was charged,\u201d the office said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradorelocationreport.com\/?p=592\">Colorado inmate who died this month had asked for new trial due to errors in lab evidence by Missy Woods<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other charges against Hobby, including impersonating a peace officer, impersonating a public servant, felony menacing and false imprisonment, are still pending.
