In 2024, Hurd defeated Hanks and four others in a crowded field for the Republican nomination after the incumbent U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert switched districts.<\/p>\n<p>The predominantly rural district covers most of Colorado\u2019s Western Slope, stretching into Pueblo and southeastern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeff Hurd<\/strong>, 46, is serving his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hurd is an attorney who started his own law practice in 2014, then joined Ireland Stapleton Pryor &amp; Pascoe PC as manager of its local branch. He lives in Grand Junction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Hanks<\/strong>, 61, is a former state lawmaker who served one term in the Colorado House beginning in 2021. Before that, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a linguist and intelligence officer. He lives in Ca\u00f1on City.<\/p>\n<p>The Colorado Sun attempted to interview both candidates to see where they stand on the war in Iran, immigration, healthcare, and other top issues. I think it\u2019s been a disaster,\u201d Hanks said, adding that he would \u201croot out fraud\u201d in the healthcare system if elected. \u201cI\u2019d like to see medical care go back to being between a patient and his or her doctor and really get the government out of it as much as possible. It\u2019s going to take some time to get there because we are so enmeshed in a government system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>When Congress passed H.R. 1, the federal tax and spending bill, it imposed work requirements for Medicaid and eliminated tax credits for Obamacare plans. Did you support that? But, he added, he probably would have voted for it \u201cbecause Congress is so useless and it\u2019s the best we could have done with the incompetence and corruption in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanks said there should have been more cuts to healthcare spending in the bill. \u201cIt should have been a budget reduction.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>CHILDCARE<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Colorado\u2019s childcare system is in crisis. (News reports and subsequent state investigations have debunked the fraud allegations as false.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we got rid of the fraud do you think we might actually be able to tax the people less and they could keep more of their money rather than shoveling it to the state and the federal governments?\u201d Hanks said. \u201cThe faster we can root it out, the better off we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>AGRICULTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>The agriculture industry in Colorado has faced a number of economic headwinds over the last several years, including volatile commodity prices, tariffs and cuts to federal food assistance. What will you do to help farmers?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Jeff Hurd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hurd declined to participate in the Sun\u2019s issue guide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Ron Hanks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hanks said he considers water the biggest issue for farmers, and he supports efforts to desalinate water in California to alleviate the demands on the Colorado River. He also wants to look into severing water rights from property ownership. \u201cWe have people coming in, buying land, selling the water rights, and then you got a desert you can never get water back on top of,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hanks also wants to limit foreign ownership of farmland, and he said he\u2019d work to promote family farms over large corporations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>MAIL-IN VOTING<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>President Trump has repeatedly attacked mail-in balloting. Do you support Colorado\u2019s election system and will you protect it from federal interference? Or do you think Congress should pass a law changing how the state\u2019s elections are run?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Jeff Hurd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hurd declined to participate in the Sun\u2019s issue guide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Ron Hanks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cColorado\u2019s election system is complete and utter trash,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cIt is not the gold standard that these BSers have said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanks said the state needed to \u201czero out\u201d its voter rolls to prevent fraud, and \u201cwe should stop mail-in balloting. We have no confidence in the chain of custody.\u201d (Elections experts insist Colorado\u2019s mail-in voting system is secure and voter fraud is rare.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth sides of the political spectrum have to have confidence that their vote matters and that all votes were counted fairly, and that all votes were from legitimate voters,\u201d he said. \u201cIf not, we have civil unrest and even civil war.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>TINA PETERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Did you support Gov. Polis\u2019 decision to grant clemency to Tina Peters?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Jeff Hurd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hurd declined to participate in the Sun\u2019s issue guide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Ron Hanks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cThe sentence was ridiculous for who she was as far as a nonprior offender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he believed her sentencing was political. \u201cI haven\u2019t had much to agree with Jared Polis on, but I agree with that. After his reelection, President Trump granted sweeping clemency to those involved.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI support the fund,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cI support the idea that those people were pardoned. I think that their incarceration was fundamentally un-American.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>BALLROOM<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>President Trump also wants Congress to approve $1 billion for his White House ballroom project. Would you vote to approve funding for that?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Jeff Hurd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hurd declined to participate in the Sun\u2019s issue guide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Ron Hanks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t heard that yet,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cI thought that the funding was all private (donations) up to this point. I see the value in the structure and I think probably Trump will do a decent job with it. I would try to kick it back to the White House, and say, \u2018hey, you said private, why don\u2019t we keep working on the private side of it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanks said that as a Republican Congressman, \u201cyou may ultimately have to support it \u2026 but I wouldn\u2019t approve it right away.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Do you support President Trump\u2019s crackdown on illegal immigration?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Jeff Hurd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hurd declined to participate in the Sun\u2019s issue guide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Ron Hanks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do, absolutely,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cAnd I think we have to work very hard\u201d to end Colorado\u2019s \u201csanctuary state\u201d policies, which prohibit local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials.<\/p>\n<p>Hanks pointed to his experience in the U.S. military, and said he was concerned about terrorists from the Middle East entering the country in retaliation for the Iran conflict. \u201cWe have legitimate serious problems, we have to crack down on it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have to know every single person that came across.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>ISRAEL FUNDING<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Do you support continued U.S. military funding for Israel?
