The Cookie Factory, a former fortune cookie factory turned contemporary art space, is having everyone over for its one year birthday party on Saturday. There will be art, there will be cake, and there will be balloon animals. <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve also got Grand Junction classic, a journey into traditional Mongolian instruments and a free poetry workshop in the San Luis Valley. <\/p>\n

Cookie Factory birthday party.<\/strong> It\u2019s been almost a year to the day that philanthropist Amanda Precourt opened the doors to a former fortune cookie factory in Denver\u2019s Baker neighborhood and started inviting the neighbors in (on Wednesdays between 4-7 p.m., and by appointment, that is).<\/p>\n

She\u2019d turned the old factory floor into a wide-open gallery, and the upstairs into a personal apartment and space to house her contemporary art collection.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost collectors want to show their collection. So they show what they bought,\u201d J\u00e9r\u00f4me Sans, artistic director and curator of the Cookie Factory, told The Colorado Sun shortly before the space opened. \u201cBut showing what you buy is just showing yourself. It\u2019s a beautiful thing, but that\u2019s not what we are doing here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, they\u2019ve used the space to mount solo shows by Sam Falls and Gary Simmons, mixed media artists invited to create brand new, large-scale works inspired by Colorado.<\/p>\n

Simmons\u2019 show, \u201cRush,\u201d is the New York-raised artist\u2019s take on the legends and lore around the wild, wild West. The show closes Saturday, and the closing reception doubles as a first birthday party for the space itself, with live music, food, party games, face painting, balloon animals and, of course, birthday cake.<\/p>\n
